Sclerotherapy involves using a micro-needle to inject a sclerosant into the veins. The veins collapse, seal shut and are reabsorbed into the body. The number of treatments varies depending on the number, size and type of veins being treated. Typically a patient will receive several injections per treatment session.

Sclerotherapy is done in our office and generally normal activities can be resumed right away. After the treatment the leg is wrapped. Compression stockings or leg wraps may need to be worn for several days after treatment.

We offer our patient's convenience and quality assurance by performing sclerotherapy treatments onsite in our fully functional operating room, comparable to those in hospitals.

Blood flows through a system of blood vessels, which are veins and arteries. Arteries carry blood rich in oxygen from your heart to all regions of the body. The function of veins is to transport the blood back to the heart. In order for veins to work, the valves must close all the way to prevent backflow of blood. The most common form is varicose veins which are known to cause symptoms that may include leg aching, pain, heaviness, fatigue, ankle swelling, muscle cramping, restlessness, itching and burning.

Normal Blood Flow

After the blood has been replenished with oxygen in the lungs, it is pumped to the body by the heart. Blood that is pumped to the lower extremities is pumped back to the heart partially by the action of the calf muscle pump. The blood returning from the lower extremities in the deep and superficial veins goes past a series of one-way valves. These valves stop the blood from flowing backwards in the veins.

Vein Reflux

The valves in your veins close just as blood begins to flow backwards. When those valves do not close properly, the blood falls backwards through the poorly closing or leaking valves which leaves other downstream veins unprotected and exposed to the weight of an increasingly high column of blood. This sudden, localized increase in blood pressure causes your veins to expand; followed by bulging and surfacing.
